Slipped disc or Lumbar Herniated disc is a condition which happens with aging, as the disc degenerates it results in outer layer cracks which allow the inner core to bulge out through the cracks in the outer portion of the disc.
Causes of Slipped Disc
The following are some of the factors that cause Slipped disc:
- Injuries that result from a direct, forceful blow to the spine
- Certain awkward motions may result in disc prolapse
- With aging the disc tends to lose its integrity and water content
- Lifting very heavy objects that strains on the back may cause the disc to herniate
- Sedentary lifestyles may sometimes contribute disc herniation
- Weak muscles and loss of elasticity
Symptoms of Slipped Disc
The symptoms of herniated disc come from the irritation or pressure on the nerves. The common symptoms of slipped disc include:
- Leg pain accompanied with or without lower back pain
- Lower back pain or pain in the buttock
- Weakness, numbness or tingling in the leg
- Loss of bladder or bowel control, which may be a result of cauda equina syndrome.
Stages of Slip or Prolapsed Disc
Disc Dehydration: In this condition the outer layer of the disc weakens which causes the loosening of the fibers around the disc and results in the flattening of the disc with an increase in diameter and loss of height and this creates a bulge.
Disc Prolapse: This is a stage where the annulus fibroses (outer layer) cracks and interior of the disc which are soft will start protruding through the outer layer. When this protruding happens the prolapsed part of the disc touches the adjoining nerves and causes pain.
Disc Extrusion: This is a condition where the protruded nucleus gets detached and starts to push out through the outer part of the disc.
Disc Sequestration: In this condition the fragment of the free nucleus pulposus, which is the inner most part of the disc, gets within the spinal canal.
